Last February 5, 2010, we went to España, Manila to visit our beloved Alma mater, UST. Its been a while since we last went there, and it felt really good to finally look back on from where we all came from. Nothing special on this day, we just want to have a short tour on this special campus. :-D
THIS MASTERPIECE BY ENGINEER-FRIAR Fr. Roque Ruaño, O.P., who once served as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, was the first structure on the Sampaloc campus. From its inauguration in 1927 until 1963, the Main Building was occupied by the following: the Fathers as their residence and the home of the Ecclesiastical Faculties (1923-1927), Faculty of Medicine (1927-1950), College of Philosophy and Letters (1927-1967), Faculty of Engineering (1927-1950), College of Education (1927-1950), Central Library (1927-1992), College of Commerce (1930-1967), UST High School (1930-1946), and the radio station DZST (1950-1963), which later became Radio Veritas.
At present, the Main Building houses the administrative offices, some non-academic departments, the UST Museum of Arts and Sciences and three colleges: the Faculty of Pharmacy, College of Science, and the Faculty of Civil Law.
During the Second World War, the Main Building was used by the Japanese military forces as an internment camp for allied prisoners. The Main Building holds the distinction of being the first earthquake-resistant building in the Philippines, a Thomasian engineer’s contribution to construction technology in the Philippines.

The Arch of the Centuries is a monument in the University of Santo Tomas (UST) at Manila, that stands fifteen meters away from the University's main vehicular entrance along España Boulevard.
The Arch of the Centuries was originally erected in 1611 at Intramuros, where UST was originally found. When the University transferred to its present location at Sampaloc, the Arch was also carried piece-by-piece and was re-erected at the front of the main vehicular entrance of the University.[1]
The original Arch which faces the Main Building was the main doorway to the university building before it was destroyed during World War II when it was at Intramuros. A newer arch faced España Boulevard, which is a reconstruction of the original arch.[2]
The Arch contains Doric columns, but is Baroque in its details. The inscription on the arch says "Gateway to the history of the finest breed of Filipinos," a reference to the numerous alumniwho have made an impact in Philippine history. On the left pillar of the facade facing España Boulevard is commemorative plaque honoring national hero José Rizal, and on the right pillar is another plaque honoring President Manuel L. Quezon; both being UST alumni.[2]
On the sides at the top of the Arch are panels depicting the life of Saint Thomas Aquinas, the patron saint of the University and of all Catholic schools.
All incoming students (freshmen and transferees), as parts of their initiation rites into the University, known as the Thomasian Welcome Walk are required to pass through under the Arch.[3] Candidates for graduation, on the other hand, also pass through under the Arch during a parade after their Baccalaureate Mass.[4] This tradition started on June 2002. Fireworks display ends the passage and signals the party afterwards. The parade, either of freshmen or graudating seniors, is done per college/faculty in random order.
There is an old superstition that while studying at the University, one cannot pass under the arch until he graduates. If done so, an event will happen that will bar his graduation from the University.

Saint Raymund's Building - Commerce and AB Building :)
Building for our 4 years of stay at UST.
Kat, Ruru, Jec
While strolling around the campus, I can't help but reminisce. From my very first day at UST, attending a 3PM class at the Commerce building, meeting new friends, my CPM friends, to majoring in Business Administration, meeting new bunch of friends, my BA3 peeps, joining different organizations, being an active student leader and all. Oh, I just miss being a student, where everything is possible.
Definitely, UST: It felt like home. ;)
